Pom Pom Push

The pom pom push was another favourite of my daughters. It requires quite a lot of dexterity to pick up the little pom poms, to position them over the holes and then to push them through.

Materials:

  • Empty egg carton

  • Tiny pom poms

  • Something to poke holes with

  • A dish to hold the pom poms

How to set up:

  1. Poke holes into the empty egg carton using something like a screwdriver or a chopstick.

  2. Enlarge the holes as needed - they should be big enough for the pom pom to fit through, but small enough so that they still need a finger to push it through.

  3. Present pom poms in a dish

To increase the challenge, you can paint colours around the holes so they can colour match to the pom poms to the holes.

Great for:

Hand-eye coordination is required in everyday tasks such as grasping objects, handwriting, playing games, eating and cooking. As with other body skills, hand-eye coordination can be practised and improved upon. This development begins in infancy.

Fine Motor Skills involve the small muscles working with the brain in order to control small movements. Developing fine motor skills helps children do things like eating, writing and getting dressed.

Focus and concentration help children to learn. Most skills are learned by practising them over and over, so being able to block out distractions and focus on particular tasks will help the rate in which they learn.
