What is a Montessori Shelf?

Montessori shelves are inspired by the Montessori method of education which is based on self-directed activity and hands-on learning. The play space is carefully curated with age-appropriate activities and toys in order to support the development of the child.

Most Montessori shelves are:

Open: They are usually open to allow full visibility enabling children full few of what toys and activities are available.

Low: The shelves are usually low so that the child can view and access every activity independently.

Stable: The shelf should be stable and support the child’s weight if they grab on to it.

Uncluttered: The number of toys and activities on display are limited and are often contained within separate baskets and trays allowing children to clearly see what is available to them.

Interest: The toys presented should be relevant to the specific interest of the child at the time to help them master the skills they are currently working on.

Note: Montessori toy shelves and toy rotations go hand in hand. Read more in our toy rotation blog post.

The shelf we have is this beautiful minimal one from Hingi. We got it when our daughter was already walking. Our son is quite confident pulling himself up now and we have not had any problems with it tipping so far. They have since come out with a number of other beautiful designs.
