Block Sets
There are many benefits to block play. For the littlest ones, it promotes the development of spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination as they learn to stack. As children grow, they learn about gravity, balance, and geometry as they build various structures. They can also be a useful tool for language development when learning to describe colours, shapes, sizes, and positions.
One of the most popular blocks for learning is the Large Stepped Pyramid. It can be used for colour recognition, learning about proportions, introduction of math concepts as well as open ended play. You can find a great article on this from Stories of Play.
You will probably use your block sets for small world play, and you may also end up with more than one set. It’s a good idea to plan ahead and think of how your collection will work together, whether you like the rainbow world of Grimms or if you prefer a more natural look. Although we do have a few rainbow items, most of our collection is a combination of natural wood and earthy tones that all work well together.
Many block sets have a depth of 4cm which means you can combine different brands together. It’s a good idea to check this before adding to your collection.
