Everyone Needs a Craft Trolley

A few months ago we went to a friend’s house and our 5/6 year olds spent FIVE HOURS independently doing crafts. I knew right away that our household needed a piece of that.

Arts and crafts are great for supporting development in young children. They help with fine motor skills, problem solving, language skills and creativity which is so important when raising independent thinkers.

I immediately set about re-branding our Art Trolley into a Craft Trolley and we are never going back.

The Trolley:

Our trolley is from Hobby Craft, but they can also be found in Ikea and on Amazon.

Organising:

I feel like how you organise your craft trolley is almost as important as what goes inside it. If everything has a place, it is less likely to end up in a mountain of chaos. Make sure to check the dimensions of your craft trolley to make sure things fit.

  1. Clear A4 folders - I put anything that comes in sheet form in these including paper, card, tissue, sticky squares and anything oversized like pipe cleaners.

  2. Angle files - 4 of the Clear A4 folders fit perfectly in these and it means that they can be stored vertically.

  3. Acrylic containers - I used glass jars to organise the markers (if you split them up by colour they look much nicer) and scissors.

  4. Organiser with adjustable dividers - I use these for storing washi tape, pom poms, beads and all kinds of other bits and pieces.

  5. Loose part storage - These are useful for larger loose items.

Craft Supplies:

To maximise the chances of having aesthetic crafts created, I would recommend carefully curating the supplies you choose to bring in. Look for options that don’t just come in bright rainbow colours, and try to put them out in groups of colours that go nicely together. For example, the flower patches come in a range of colours and I selected the softer more pastel colours to put into the craft trolley. I will put the earthier colours out together when I refill the supply.
